The Sun Salutations are an integral part of a vinyasa practice, and can be considered a complete yoga practice in and of themselves. We'll breakdown every pose in Sun Salutation A, from Tadasana to Adho Mukha Svanasana. Then we'll start to connect breath and movement to step out of our minds and into our bodies, building confidence and strength.

Hanumanasana

Hanumanasana is the asana named after the devotional God Hanuman. During the class you will learn more about the mythology behind his epic leap from India to Sri Lanka. The “ splits pose” is a work in progress. In this class everything will build up to this peak pose. Modifications will be given and we will use props to assist in opening and relaxing the muscles in preparation for hanumanasana. All other poses will support the body stretching and opening for your safest and fullest expression of your great leap!

The Eight Limbs

Yoga isn’t just fancy asana or poses. It’s the quest of the soul, to the soul. 
“The right means are just as important as the end in view. Patanjali enumerates these means as the eight limbs or stages of Yoga for the quest of the soul.” ~B.K.S. Iyengar ~ light on Yoga

Yama and Niyama control the yogi’s passions and emotions and keep him in harmony with his fellow man. Asanas keep the body healthy and strong and in harmony with nature. Finally, the yogi becomes free of body consciousness. He conquers the body and renders it a fit vehicle for the soul. The first 3 stages are the outward quests.
The next two stages, Pranayama and Pratyahara, teach the aspirant to regulate the breathing, and thereby control the mind! These two stages are the inner quest.
DharanaDhyana and Samadhi take the yogi into the innermost recesses of his soul. These stages are the quest of the soul.
